Earlier this week, the Huffington Post reported that the wealthiest and whitest citizens are the leading contributors for the GOP hopefuls. Is anyone suprised by this? When Giulliani made his stop in St. Louis he went to the ritziest mall, Plaza Frontenac, and spoke with supporters who stopped by to chat after they finished their shopping trips to Saks and on their way to Tiffany’s. *Note:* this mall is the only location in St. Louis where such stores can be found, but it is located next to a hold out trailer court that Frontenac residents have been trying to run out of town for years.
The most amazing thing about Giulliani’s St. Louis stop? He was sitting in a pricey restaurant talking about minimum wage and America’s workers. Perhaps the most dumbfounding aspect of the Republican party is the patriotic urge to vote GOP that is still striking a chord with the lower and lower middle class. Even after the President strikes down SCHIP again and requests twice that amount for welfare programs and weaponry for Iraq people are wearing their flag on their sleeves and staying red. Even after Anne Coulter spews venomous drivel in the name of this party people are preparing to stake their yards and sticker their Camaros.
But it isn’t just the people who have nothing better to do than drink PBR and crush the cans on their eagle tattoo emblazoned chests who are supporting them. It’s also the aristocrats whose mummies and daddies voted for Reagan who haven’t stopped to take in the shape of the political landscape but support these sexual deviants and out of touch frillionaires. Are we really surprised?
But the bigger question is where campaign donations in general are coming from, be it Democrat or Republican. Obama and Clinton are rolling in funding dough as well. Obama’s wealthy endorser is Oprah Winfrey, which means that the majority of white, middle-class, stay at home mom’s are pulling their husband’s dollars together because the Church of Winfrey said so. I would equate this to the aristocrat method for picking a candidate to support. Clinton? She has raised more money than any candidate in history and her dollars are coming from those earning less than the living wage. But, she was also in hot water for funding issues from questionable donors. I wonder though, where does that $4 for the Presidential campaign from our tax returns go… which candidate?

After SCHIP was vetoed and the attempt to overturn the veto was failed, I read a very thoughtful quote from a citizen (this is paraphrased, as I cannot find the actual quote!): “With the veto of the SCHIP continuation bill, the president has made it clear that he will advocate for American children, but once they are born, they are on their own.”
Possibly the thing I despise most about politics is, that to a moderate extent, it’s simply marketing. And it’s done in sly, secretive and, at times, down right weasily ways.
