I recently had to attend a court hearing. I wasn’t appearing before the judge; I was strictly an observer to the proceedings. However, I dressed as if I was a participant, that is, a jacket and dress pants.
As I was waiting for my case to be announced, several other hearings were held. Other than the attorneys, and me, no one else had put any effort into their appearance. I saw more jeans and t-shirts than at an Aerosmith concert. One young man even had on a ball cap, although he did finally remove it when he approached the bench, after his attorney nudged him.
Maybe I’m showing my age, but as a society, we are taking “casual day” to a whole new level. I see people in ensembles that basically amount to pajamas at the grocery store, post office, doctor’s office. I’ve even seen slippers. Not flip-flops, but fuzzy bedroom slippers. I kid you not. I’m not saying we need to break out the pantyhose and skirts when we run to grab a gallon of milk, but just remember, you never know who you might run into.
My mother always said you never get a second chance at a first impression. She was a wise woman.

You may have run into my husband, who dons his blue house slippers at the supermarket. Honestly, you’re lucky if he wears pants and shoes at all.
Pantyhose = my nightmare!

I’m definitely guilty of running errands in soccer shorts and tee shirts, but they are clean and without holes. And they don’t clash. And I don’t wear slippers outside of the house! Ever!
What cracks me up is the girls who have the purposefully messy hair and full face of make up in the pajamas. Because then you know it was intentional! Hehe!
Just say no to pantyhose. Please!

May this rant be applied to colleges and universities as well?
I think there’s an implied thought among the slipshod that disheveled and unfastidiously appearances should not be “judged” because they, the slobs, do not “judge” others on such grounds.
Sadly, you can easily see the double entendre here…

I have dress slippers… does that Count??? Of course, I wouldn’t wear them to court!

I like the ones that still have the curlers in their hair. It used to be just the old lady you see like that but now it is anyone.

I agree! One of my pet peeves is seeing people in their pajamas running errands – I will wear a baseball cap and yoga pants to run errands, but like another poster said, mine are clean and I like to think I look pulled together!
Some people really don’t care anymore, and that’s just sad.
