Did you know that make-up, like milk and parking meters, will expire? Perhaps you were already aware that your mascara should be replaced every four to six months, but did you know that even powder blush and eye shadow have a shelf life? There is no law requiring cosmetics to have printed expiration dates, so the consumer has to be proactive.
When was the last time you cleaned out your makeup bag and washed your brushes? If your answer is “uh…,” then read on.
Obviously, you should toss any liquid foundations, cream-based or stick-like products, such as concealers, which are starting to separate (unless they are oil-based), feel slimy or smell “off.” These products generally have a life span of 12-18 months. While we’re on the subject, you might need two separate foundation shades, depending on if you have a little summer glow or not. Ivory bisque isn’t going to flatter your summery sun-kissed skin, just saying.
Do you use a sponge to apply your foundation? Replace it monthly. Sponges are disposable, and the best place to breed ooky bacteria. While you’re at it, replace the sponge in your kitchen sink, too.
Powder-based products, such as pressed powder, blush, eye shadow, and bronzers last about three years. If you start to notice a hard darker “crust” on the top, you can gently scrape that off with the dull edge of a butter knife. That discoloration is probably caused by the oils on your skin being transferred to the product surface by your brushes and applicators. If you use the powder puff that comes with the compact, turn it over so the side that touches your face doesn’t touch the powder, or use the plastic liner between the puff and the powder.
Mascara and liquid eyeliner should be replaced at least every four to six months. No sharing of eye makeup, unless you want to play roulette with pink eye or other infections. Also, never pump your mascara brush into the tube – you just force in air, drying it out faster and possibly shoving in airborne bacteria. Instead, swirl the brush as you extract it.
Lip, eyeliner and eyebrow pencils are good for many years. Always store them with the cover on, but if you lose it (why are they transparent?), wrap a plastic sandwich bag around the end until you can replace it. Sharpen them before each use to expose fresh product.
Lipsticks usually last for a couple of years, but if it gets goopy or changes texture, pitch it. Also toss it if it’s frosted or a shade that was fashionable when Milli Vanilli were on the radio. Again, no sharing – do you really know where your BFF’s mouth has been?
While you’re at it, look at each product in your bag. Have you used that baby blue shadow or body glitter recently? If so, please get thee to a professional make up artist, stat! Just like your closet, your makeup goes through trends and seasons. If you haven’t touched it in a year, it’s time to bid it adieu.
Finally, wash your brushes in warm water and mild soap (like baby shampoo) at least once a week and allow to air dry. Once a month, I also take everything out of my bag and wipe out the inside.
The best part of cleaning out your bag? Buying pretty new products! Don’t have a bag? Right now, Clinique is offering a summer palette in a sunny new tote free with any $32.50 purchase.

Wow, I have some overhauling to do. I had no idea that some of those products would expire. Should I even mention that it’s been an eternity since I washed a applicator or brush? Oops.

How long does Chapstick last? That is a staple in the bottom of my bag (somewhere…I can’t find it!).

Eyeliner is the only make up I wear on a daily basis (and that’s if I remember to put it on…) and I recently found an eyeliner that I had forgotten about from like 6 months ago. Good to know I can still use it! Ahh, the wonders you discover while purging for a move! Thanks, Kim!
