Can You Commit? Network says “I Do” to Bride Channel 24/7

In a society where marriages are a dime a dozen and the divorce rate has a 50% chance of success, what better idea than to exploit the sanction of marriage by devoting a channel to nothing but weddings! (Did my sarcasm translate?) That’s right, the WE channel recently announced it’s developing a sister channel that is completely and utterly devoted to brides around the clock.

Shows that are currently featured on WE will make the move over to the new channel, such as “Amazing Wedding Cakes”, “My Fair Wedding” and the famed “Bridezillas”. I’m sure we can also expect many more love/hate bride reality show concepts to come down the pipeline as well. Sigh.

As a woman who is semi-allergic to the idea of a holy union as it is, knowing that there will be a channel to feature more bridezillas (i.e. claw-sinkers in silly dresses determined to get their man down the aisle whether he’s Mr. Right or Mr. Two-Three Years) is none too thrilling. It just seems that nowadays women are more focused on a lavish wedding over the big picture of sharing your entire life with someone.

Sure, the WE channel likely did its marketing research and they know it has the potential for success, but isn’t it a bit much?

A prime example of misuse of unions: in February, CBS announced plans for a new reality show called “Arranged Marriage” to debut sometime in 2010. Two strangers will meet while walking down the aisle and then it will be a crapshoot to see if it will work out.  The series will continue to document the couples post-ceremony and watch the relationship grow – or not.

I foresee it like going down like “The Bachelor” series- the couples put on a happy face for the cameras, but as soon as their five minutes are up, it’s hello, splitsville!

I understand the appeal of reality television, it can be addicting knowing there are women who actually find prince charming or are more desperate than you is comforting either way, but is it safe to say that these dream wedding and man-eating bride reality shows are partially to blame for a skewed perception of marriage in this country? Speak now or forever hold your peace…

At this rate before long we’ll be watching something to the effect of “Arranged Marriage”, only shotgun-style with strangers who thought they were having a one-night stand only to find out their condom was sabotaged by a camera crew. Again, sigh. The new WE wedding network is likely one channel I’ll give my regrets to. The six weddings I am attending this summer are plenty.

The week ahead

Oh fer cripes sake – a whole channel dedicated to nothing but weddings? Oy. I liked G.I. Joe better than Barbie as a kid and didn’t spend one minute dreaming about my wedding day. Even though I’ve grown to love girly stuff, bridezilla 24/7 is just too much for this newbie in girlyland. Give me Law & Order, CSI – NY, Dexter or Weeds please.

Weddings and all things related (how many shows about cake do we need?) seem to be the new trend in reality shows.

Personally, I’d rather watch bridezillas than watch another reality show featuring parents who exploit their children.

I have to admit to watching “Who’s Wedding is it Anyway?” and “Bridezillas” and by “watching” I mean “zoning out in front of.” I think it’s hilarious/frightening to watch some of these couples but in the mean time, I occassionally get a good idea for upcoming weddings I’m involved with! And I’m right with Kim… at least the couples are exploiting themselves rather than their children.
