Can someone please tell me what ever happened to great weekend programming like ABC’s ‘TGIF’ and CBS’ Saturday night lineup?
Granted, being a twenty-something in this great city, I don’t spend many weekend evenings in front of the television, but as a ‘tween’ I spent every Friday and Saturday night sitting at home, watching TV with my family.
On Fridays, it was ‘TGIF’ on ABC. The comedy block featured ‘classics’ like Boy Meets World, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Step by Step, Family Matters, Sister Sister, and, for the puppet lover in all of us, Dinosaurs. Seriously, could you ask for a better way to spend your Friday night? And as a special bonus, your TV was already queued to ABC’s Saturday morning lineup. Fudge anyone?…
And then Saturday night, you hit the primetime jackpot on CBS. You had Kyle Chandler and his orange cat saving the world one newspaper at a time on Early Edition; Roma Downey and Della Reese inspiring hope on Touched By an Angel. Then, you traveled out West and spent some time in Colorado Springs with everyone’s favorite doctor/mom/civil rights activist Jane Seymour on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, and the night ended with the show that spawned a million Chuck Norris jokes, Walker, Texas Ranger. I rarely stayed awake for the whole episode, but don’t worry, I know the theme song by heart.
That was my weekend – every weekend. For a long time I thought this ritual was normal. Then I went to college. I met people who didn’t sit around watching TV with their families (gasp!). I met people who had never even seen these shows (double gasp!). But whether you watched these shows or not, you have to admit there isn’t much family friendly programming on the tube these days.
Have you looked at your Friday and Saturday primetime lineups lately? Aside from a handful of comedies, it is littered with drama, mostly of the crime fighting variety (ie Ghost Whisperer, CSI, Law and Order, Medium). Little Bobby and Sally love those shows, right?!
And if you think you are better off going the ‘reality’ route, you can choose from Dateline, 48 Hours, America’s Most Wanted, or Cops. Now, I know my parents used to always let us watch the Cops intro (hands down, best TV theme song ever), but that was after we had already had our fill of entertainment elsewhere. What’s a kid supposed to watch these days? Supernanny?
Now, I don’t have any children (only a somewhat obedient dog who perks up when he hears barking on TV), and so perhaps I am overreacting. I guess you could always switch over to Disney Channel and watch Jonas, right? Does the family TV night even still exist? What would you watch? Inquiring minds need to know.

UGH! You are so right! Except my Saturday nights were filled with SNICK on Nickelodeon, Starting with Clarissa Explains It All, then to All That, Ren & Stimpy and Are You Afraid of the Dark? Programming demographics have become really divided these days, distinctly into toddler, children, teen-young adult and adult. As an adult, now, I still wouldn’t mind sitting down and watching TGIF and SNICK with my theoretical children, but I’m pretty sure my head would explode with too much kids-only programming such as the Disney Channel and Cartoon Network provide.
What is this reflecting about the American family, now..?

TGIF was the best! I used to love it when it had Perfect Strangers on , and the show Going Places. I think that was on only one season. I can still sing the TGIF jingle.

Jenn is right! With Halloween right around the corner, I was at Walmart the other day and saw a DVD with five episodes of Are you afraid of the dark? for $5. I ALMOST gave in and bought it! Haha! Also, totally forgot about Dinosaurs and yes, I am a puppet lover…which sounds really creepy now that I’m reading it back to myself. But nonetheless, I will now be going to YouTube to look up Dinosaurs and laugh at the ridiculous TGIF programming I used to watch.
Even ‘tween’ television is branching off now, though! Super weird. Have you heard about Nickolodeon’s new ‘NICK Tween’ channel? Yes, it’s real. With programming like Degrassi (one of favorites to this day), but waaaaayyyyy to violent and sexual for like the suggested 10-13 year olds. Not ok!
Regardless, wonderful post! Can’t wait to read more! Thanks!

TGIF shows are classics… what will the next generation of kids do without any Mr. Feeny jokes… sad state of affairs!

Ah SNICK! I did not have cable growing up (yes, I nkow, I was deprived), so when ever we went to my cousin’s house I would just sit there and watch Nickelodeon ALL day! Guess my addiction started at a young age, huh?
Really though, I would TOTALLY watch all these shows if they were still on. Not sure if they still do, but ABC Family used to show Boy Meets World and Sabrina during the afternoons and I loved watching them while I ate lunch!

I may be showing my age here, but I remember Friday nights watching Full House and Family Matters on Friday evenings with my little sisters as we sat and ate our happy meals. It was compulsory if I wasn’t at a slumber party!

Love it! I was a huge fan of TGIF as well…what about “Just the 10 of Us”? My favorite saying came from that show: “I may be dumb, but I’m not stupid!”.
Mike and I have made it a point to stay home more on weekends, so maybe we’ll have to invest in some old school DVD sets. He already has Mad Men, but I’d be down for some Clarissa Explains it All. Her look is starting to come back in style..

I remember planning a slumber party in 5th grade on a Friday night. My mom asked me if I wanted her to take us to the movies. I replied, “No mom, we’ll just watch TGIF. Duh.” Yep, I was cool. But seriously, it was the cool thing to do on Friday night! Sometimes I watch TV on Friday nights when I have to work the weekend and I would be overjoyed to spend some time with Eric Matthews (my #2 biggest 5th grade crush, second only to Leonardo DiCaprio)! I think I’m going to look into getting some of these shows on DVD………
PS-Danielle, thanks for bringing me back to the good old days

Ha, I think the SNICK comment got me. I would plan my Friday evenings around catching “Are You Afraid of the Dark,” possibly the best “teen” show ever on television.
