As the seasons change, so does your wardrobe. It’s time to put away the shorts and tank tops, and dig out the fuzzy sweaters and wool coats…
While you switch out your closet, switch out your beauty bag as well. The products you use to combat heat and humidity aren’t going to work as well with the drier, cooler air of fall and winter. And the darker, jewel tones of fall need more substantial makeup than summer’s pastels.
If you are prone to dry, flaky skin in the winter, look for emollient based moisturizers, especially creams which will last longer than lotions. Even switching to a moisturizing body wash can help keep your skin soft and hydrated. Drinking plenty of water can help keep your skin glowing.
Unless you visit the fake-bake beds during the winter, you may need to go a shade lighter on your foundation. Pack away the bronzer and try a soft neutral pink blush for a fresh-off-the-ski-slopes flush to your cheeks.
I love the deeper, more saturated fall colors, especially the purples and greens. Get your eye makeup on trend by switching out your black or brown eyeliner for a dark purple or forest green, topped with a caramel or plum eyeshadow.
Don’t forget to pair those smoky eyes with a strong lip color. Again, look for moisturizing products and glosses to keep your pout from looking parched. If it does get a little flaky, gently exfoliate your lips with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Keep the flakes at bay by applying a rich lip balm under your lipstick.
Finally, finish off your look with one of the new darker nail colors, in a rich red or deep grape purple. If you’re not bold enough to wear it on your fingernails, try your toes.
Speaking of your tootsies, just because they’re covered up with socks and boots, don’t forget about them. Slather them with a body butter cream before you pull on the socks, to help keep them summertime-smooth.
The holiday season is just around the corner and that means shiny strappy sandals and slinky dresses (hint hint – the next column!)

I have always been afraid of dark nail polish, but am thinking about trying a deep burgundy. I feel like it only works on short nails (not as harsh), and have been keeping mine short for a while now. But I’m still not sure if I can pull it off… plus, the maintenance is annoying. I usually go au natural or stick with pale beiges and pinks so you don’t notice the chips!
Can’t wait for a holiday party-wear post. Picking out my church/family friendly Christmas Eve outfit and not so family friendly New Year’s Eve dress is my favorite part of the holiday season!
