Let’s just get one thing clear – I do not like scary movies. Back in middle school, when everyone else was rushing out to see Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, I hung around with my parents exposing myself to ‘classics’ like Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and The Gods Must Be Crazy. So, I’m not going to sit here and pretend to be a horror expert. I do, however, know a thing or two about pop culture (you should see the stacks of Entertainment Weekly‘s on my floor).
Unless you have been hiding in your own dimly lit bedroom for the last few weeks, you have probably heard of a little movie called Paranormal Activity. Not to be confused with Pandorum, starring Dennis Quaid and a spaceship, Paranormal Activity is the movie promising to scare the bejesus out of you. You know, the one where the preview isn’t even of the actual movie, but instead shots of the audience totally freaking out…
But what is really freaky (and by that, I mean really freaky awesome) is the back story behind the film that critics and audiences are hailing as the next Blair Witch Project (and no, I haven’t seen that one either).
Paranormal Activity was shot in just seven days and cost $11,000 to make. It was then purchased by DreamWorks for $350,000 with the intention of a big budget makeover, with the original tacked on as a DVD extra.
Pretty impressive roots for a movie that claimed the top spot last weekend, grossing $22 million in its first weekend of wide release.
So, how, do you ask, did a little movie not even planned for a major theatrical release end up on top?
Same way Barack became President- by the people.
Okay, maybe it is a bit dramatic comparing Paranormal Activity‘s rise to the top to the President of our fine nation, but still, have you been on Twitter lately? It would be interesting to see some statistics on how often Paranormal Activity has been a trending topic the last few weeks.
The biggest push for the movie came with the message at the end of the trailer telling fans to ‘demand’ it be shown at their local theater. In its first week, Paranormal Activity was shown in just 160 theaters. The film grossed $7.9 million; that’s almost $50 grand per screen, but who’s counting, right? The next week, the fear spread to 760 theaters and made $20.2 mil.
Paramount’s ‘Demand It’ campaign brought the film to almost 2,000 theaters last weekend, and ‘the little horror film that could’ has raked in 62.5 million so far. With Halloween this weekend, that number is sure to grow.
Now, back to my lackluster appreciation of horror movies.
Have I actually seen Paranormal Activity? No. But, for the first time in a long time, I actually want to see a scary movie.
But only in the middle of a bright, sunny day, so I will have hours and hours of daylight to burn before turning off the lights and (trying) to sleep.

I hate scary movies too, but I’ve heard so much about this one! If I do get up enough courage to watch it (which is doubtful), it will have to be with someone who has already seen it so they can tell me when all the scary parts are coming. And a pillow to cover my face!

Ditto. I’m the biggest chicken that ever was. I am curious to know what all the hub-bub is about though! What’s the plot about?

Danielle, I dare you to go see this movie and then actually write a post rating its scare factor… is it just hype or is it really a “hide behind your large popcorn bag” scary movie?

All I know about the plot is that a couple thinks there is something spooky going on in their bedroom, so they set up a video camera to record them sleeping. I can only assume their suspicions are confirmed…
And if and when I go see this movie, I will FOR SURE follow up with you guys on how it went. But is there anyone else out there that can tell me if it is worth the $10?
(PS Since when did going to the movies get so expensive?!)

AND just a note…
I just saw an ad for Paranormal Activity on Facebook. For a sidebar usually filled with match.com knock-off sites and American Apparel ads, it is kind of a big deal to see an ad for a movie!

Speaking of Facebook ads, due to my ‘single’ status, I’ve been getting sidebar ads recently that say “Want a boyfriend?” with a picture of some fabulously tanned and smiling hunk! And then I saw an ad the other day for Paranormal and said, “THANK YOU, Facebook! Please stop calling me out for being single and happy…for now!” Hahaha! And yes, I think this is a HUGE deal! I rarely see movies up there!
Anyways, I too, am a huge scaredy cat and want to see this movie so bad, but am worried that I will spend the following week asking my 15-year-old sister to have slumber parties with me every night so that I don’t fear for my life. The curiousity is killing me, though, so I might have to give in on this one… It’s just one of those times when I’m gonna have to suck it up and go…even if I do end up screaming out loud in a movie theater!
Oh, and…Pandorum. Hahaha! Nice!

I saw Paranormal Activity over the weekend – unfortunately there was a group of 20 kids in front of us who felt it was appropriate to laugh when it got quiet. Totally blew the movie for everyone in the theater, otherwise I would have voted it pretty decent, and might have even gotten more scared!

I did see it on Halloween in honor of the holiday! It is definitely worth the $10+ to see it in a theater because of 2 reasons. 1) With a packed theater, as mine was, you get an almost communal/fraternal feeling among everyone. When everyone jumps, gasps, and yes, screams, at the same time you don’t feel so silly at your own reactions and like too much of a scaredy cat! And 2) Most importantly, if you don’t see it in a theater, DON’T rent or buy it when it comes out on DVD and watch it at your own home. If I had watched it at home instead of the theater, I don’t think I would have been able to walk up my steps and sleep at night!
