When I started blogging way back when, Wordpress was still in version 1.something or other, and adding pictures and media to a post was a difficult as walking to school uphill, in the snow, both ways. After about a year of dabbling with blogs (and a couple of topic and URL switches) I got the guts to haul myself out from behind the computer screen and attend a bloggers’ meetup. I am not going to say it was easy to motivate myself to do this, and I am not going to say that during my drive to Schlafly Bottleworks I wasn’t tempted to turn that car right around and never meet a blogger. But I made it, and I had a helluva a time meeting other people who enjoyed talking about blogging just as much as I did. My non-blogging friends were relieved that I finally shut up about my “silly blawg,” and I made a few friends that I still bounce ideas off of and chat with pretty regularly.
A lot has changed since my first meetup back in 2007: I am now a full-time writer, a tech geek extraordinaire, married (*gasp-choke*) with almost children, and I feel like I have met just about everyone in St. Louis who has sneezed in the general direction of a social media tool. Honestly, if it weren’t for having the chance to geek out with some of my online friends every once in a while, I probably would have lost interest in all this and would be selling pencils in front of sporting events as a hobby…
Since I am not selling pencils or playing instruments along Clark Street, it seems fitting that almost exactly two years later I am making plans to attend another meetup, like the blogger meetup so long ago, at the exact same place. But this time I am not sweating buckets about it, and the meetup is with some folks from Twitter.
Like Derek Zoolander’s School, encapsulating the event into a title would be long and trying and would probably sound something like: “a evening for people who want to meet other St. Louis social media fans to celebrate being thankful, and want to do good stuff for the world, too.” Instead they figured people would be willing to read their webpage to learn a bit about the event, and they just called it Tweetsgiving… Though it doesn’t really lend itself to Blue Steel, the name probably makes it easier to talk about on Twitter. So here is the lowdown on St. Louis’ Tweetsgiving celebration:
- What – Tweetsgiving St. Louis 2009 – An Epic Change Event
- Where – Schlafly Bottleworks 7260 Southwest Avenue Maplewood, MO
- When – Tuesday, November 24th from 5:30pm until 8pm
Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased in advance online at Ye Old Tweetsgiving Website, or from Suzanne Tucker (aka @ZenMommy on Twitter). All proceeds will go to EpicChange.org, and last year the money raised helped build a school. There will be raffle prizes, music and of course the opportunity to meet some new people who share your social media compulsion er interests…
