Calling All Network Execs: TV & Movies Maven finds you the next big hit

My personal opinion? Twitter is the shiznit. It is (slightly) less stalker-based than Facebook, plus you have a never ending supply of cool links to check out. And, this just in: it is the number one word of 2009 (beating out Obama, H1N1, stimulus, and vampire – eat that Twi-hards!).

But just in case you needed one more reason to get a Twitter account (what? My personal recommendation wasn’t enough?!), turns out answering the simple question, “What are you doing?,” could make you a star.

Justin Halpern is 29 years old. He lives at home with his dad Sam, a 73-year-old retiree. With his father as his muse, Justin created a Twitter account @shitmydadsays, which is basically just that – quotes from his ‘old-school, ball-busting’ dad.

Entertaining enough, but good enough for television? CBS seems to think so. The network just enlisted Justin to write a pilot based on his feed. That’s right kids, he is getting a television show because of his tweets!

If the plan works, it will be the first of its kind – a series generated by an online social networking site. And network execs don’t think it will be the last.

Matt Cherniss, who develops programs for Fox, told TV Guide Magazine, “Social networking has worked its way into the fabric of the everyday lives of people, and there is a lot of comedy and creativity in those interactions.”

Tell me about it. Fox is already developing a sitcom based on one of my personal favorite websites, Texts from Last Night. If you do not know what this is, get out from under your rock and check it out (but maybe not at work… borderline inappropriate).

Like many of you, I am a sucker for internet sensations, and this news about Justin and TFLN got me thinking, “I wonder if my other internet faves could make it to the silver screen?”

Here is the short list of who I think deserves a shot at extending their 15 minutes…

Stuff White People Like
Yes, this is already a book, and yes, it is already widely popular. All the more reason to give it its own show right? Just picture a comedy/variety style show on a network like Comedy Central or Spike. Think it sounds offensive? I dare you to read the full list (now up to 129 items!) and not agree with most of them.

Kittens inspired by kittens
Kittens pretty much rule the viral video market. Add in an adorable little child and you’ve got internet gold. I don’t think it needs a full 30 minutes, but there is definitely potential to develop little shorts on a children’s network. Plus, endless possibilities- puppies inspired by puppies, turtles inspired by turtles… the list goes on.

Bacon
Bacon rules Twitter. I am not going to even try to explain why this is. I really have no idea (maybe because bacon is so delicious?). I follow @ministryofbacon, which retweets everything mentioned about bacon on Twitter and it is seriously insane. Food Network- jump on this!

Doglover199709
I often wonder if this girl is going to someday regret posting videos of her singing along to pop songs alone in her room on the internet for all to see. But you know what? I guarentee she will be fine if she gets a million dollar deal out of it. Semi-awkward heroine? Check. Pop music? Check. Plus, she wears the same shirt in almost every video. This is a cartoon show just waiting to be made.

Leprechaun in Mobile, Alabama
Hands down, my favorite viral video of all time. Is this the next Fringe? Lost? X Files? The drama centers around a mysterious villain, guarding a pot of gold, who only comes out at night and disappears when you shine a light on him. Plus, you get to cast someone to play the amateur artist who draws that brilliant sketch!

Kimmie English, @englishscope
I can’t make this list and not include my favorite person to follow on Twitter! Blame my love for Mizzou basketball, but Kimmie is just adorable. He is always showing support for his team and other Mizzou Athletics as well. Plus, he posted a picture of his El Rancho steak nachos this week, so he pretty much rocks my world.

So there you have it. Network executives, I will be patiently awaiting my royalties checks in the mail. Thank you and you’re welcome.

Along the lines of Stuff White People Like, there is People of Walmart (http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/). There are not that many Walmarts near where I live now, so this site always reminds me of all the craziness of Walmart that I am missing!

Thank you soooooooooooo much for writing this post! All of those links are amazing! Truly! I especially enjoy Kittens inspired by kittens and the bacon takeover on Twitter! Hahaha! In addition to People of WalMart, I would like to suggest that you visit This Is Why You’re Fat: http://thisiswhyyourefat.com/ It’s already a book, but c’mon now…twinkee caserole encased in jello? REALLY? That’s just not right. But beware, this Web site may force you to go into super diet mode. Lol. It’s really THAT bad. Anyway, thanks again for the post! LOVE IT! Now I’m going to be distracted at work the rest of the watching funny videos and reading ridiculous things on Twitter.
